Burg Ulrichstein crowns the Schlossberg, a former volcanic vent of the Vogelsberg range rising to almost 610 metres above the highest town in Hesse. Of this twelfth century fortress, raised to guard trade routes, only fragments remain: a rebuilt watchtower now used as a viewing platform, the foundations of a chapel, stables and a cistern. Since the early 2000s the ruin has been surrounded by a six hectare nature garden, the Vogelsberggarten, laid out with a themed trail and a herb garden.
