To make a day of it

Burg Straßberg stands in Straßberg (Zollernalbkreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Straßberg crowns the Schlossberg, a 755 metre spur that once guarded the climb onto the Alb along an old Roman road. Built around 1150 and substantially reworked from the mid 13th century into the structure that survives today, it was converted into a residential schloss at the end of the 16th century. The compact complex is marked by a five sided residential and defensive tower built of rusticated stone, a central palas topped with timber framing, and a gatehouse bordering a moat partly cut into the bedrock. The castle remains in private hands and is inhabited by its owner, so viewing today is largely limited to the exterior.

What to know

  • The castle is privately owned and inhabited, so the interior cannot be visited.
  • Reaching it involves walking up to the rocky spur of the Schlossberg, at 755 metres elevation.
  • There are no listed opening hours or admission fees, as access is limited to the exterior.
  • A 17th century chapel still stands in the outer courtyard of the castle.
