To make a day of it

Burg Steinegg (Bonndorf) stands in Bonndorf im Schwarzwald (Landkreis Waldshut), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Steinegg is a ruined hilltop castle standing on a wooded ridge at 720 metres above sea level, just next to the ruin of Burg Roggenbach, near Bonndorf im Schwarzwald. Built in the 12th century by the lords of Steinegg, followers of the Dukes of Zähringen, it later passed to the Nellenburg family before being destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War. Visitors today find a surviving keep, a six-metre stretch of wall and a rock-cut ditch twenty metres deep. Inside the keep, an 18th-century breach opened onto a chamber lined with smoothly dressed stone, long believed to be a treasury or dungeon but originally the castle's emergency cistern.
