To make a day of it

Burg Schweinheim stands in Euskirchen (Kreis Euskirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Schweinheim is a former moated castle, a Wasserburg, located in the Euskirchen district that bears its name. Little is known about its origins, though a document from 1333 already mentions a house, a farm, a village and a court called Schweinheim, held as a fief from Jülich. The complex once consisted of an outer bailey and a main residence, separated by water-filled moats. The site is also known for the discovery there of a medieval pig-shaped money box found with old coins, regarded as one of the earliest identifiable German piggy banks.

What to know

  • The outer bailey (Vorburg) was largely demolished in the 19th century, leaving only a corner tower and a few wall remnants.
  • After these demolitions the site developed into a large agricultural estate, which limits what visitors can see today of a medieval castle.
  • No verified information is available regarding visiting hours or organized public access.
  • Much of the site's interest lies in the archaeological discovery of a medieval pig-shaped money box, rather than in a structured visitor route.
