To make a day of it

Burg Rehburg stands in Rehburg-Loccum (Landkreis Nienburg/Weser), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Rehburg no longer stands as a visible fortress: its 13th-century remains, built by the Welf dynasty to control a strategic crossing through the wetlands near the Steinhuder Meer, were covered in the 18th century by a half-timbered building. That classical-style structure, later extended in the 1980s, now serves as the town hall of Rehburg-Loccum. Visitors come less for ruins than for a site whose foundations recall a stronghold once fought over by the Welfs, the Counts of Hoya and the Bishops of Minden.

What to know

  • The current building is a working town hall, not a site open for conventional tourist visits.
  • No medieval structure remains visible above ground, as the original fortress disappeared beneath later construction.
  • Archaeological excavations in 2017 and 2019 uncovered wooden posts and structures dating from the 9th to the 17th century.
  • Items found on site, including ceramics and metal objects, are kept at the local Heimatmuseum Rehburg.
  • The site lies roughly three kilometers west of the Steinhuder Meer, in Lower Saxony.
