Schloss Rodenberg stands in Rodenberg (Landkreis Schaumburg), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
In the centre of Rodenberg, in Lower Saxony, a group of fortified remains marks the site of a former residence of the counts of Schaumburg. Of the castle itself, destroyed in the town fire of 1859, only the former hall building survives, now housing a local history museum, but the grounds still show the traces of a notable defensive system: earthworks, a water-filled moat and bastion remains uncovered during excavations in the early 2000s. The site can now be visited as an open-air museum, where the layout of the vanished stronghold remains legible in the landscape.
What to know
- Only the former hall building, now a local museum, remains from the original castle.
- The rest of the visit takes place outdoors, on the fortified grounds uncovered by excavation.
- The site is bordered by the Rodenberger Aue stream and a side channel, with the moat still holding water.
- Walking is on flat ground, around the remaining earthworks and bastion traces.
- The site is protected as a Baudenkmal.
