To make a day of it

Burg Neurandsberg stands in Rattenberg (Landkreis Straubing-Bogen), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Neurandsberg stands in ruins on a hill above the village of Neurandsberg, part of the municipality of Rattenberg in Bavaria. What survives of the medieval stronghold are sections of the enclosure wall reaching some four metres in height, along with remnants of an outer defensive wall featuring half-round towers. Nearby stands a baroque pilgrimage church built at the end of the 17th century on the site of the former castle chapel, which still houses a seated figure of the Virgin and Child rescued from that earlier chapel.

What to know

  • The site sits on a hilltop above the village of Neurandsberg and can be visited freely at any time of year.
  • What remains are partial ruins, sections of wall and tower remnants, with no roofed interior to explore.
  • Information panels on site explain the history of the fortress and its vanished chapel.
  • Reaching the ruins involves a climb, so sturdy footwear and some physical effort are advisable.
  • The nearby late-baroque pilgrimage church is worth a stop for its older statuary.
