To make a day of it

Burg Hummertsried stands in Eberhardzell (Landkreis Biberach), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Hummertsried was a medieval stronghold, now vanished, located about 300 metres southwest of the chapel in the hamlet of Hummertsried. First recorded in 1246 as Humprechtsried, it was built in the 13th century as the seat of the local lesser nobility, the lords of Hummertsried, before being sold to Ochsenhausen Abbey in 1613. Excavations carried out in 1968 uncovered three successive building phases spanning the 13th to the 16th century, with the site divided into an outer and an inner ward separated by a moat. Only remains of the foundations and the moat survive today, the only trace left of a keep that once stood seven metres tall.

What to know

  • This is not a standing castle to visit but an open archaeological site, reduced to foundation remains and a moat.
  • No building survives above ground, the medieval keep having disappeared entirely.
  • The site lies in open countryside, right next to the chapel of the Hummertsried hamlet.
  • No opening hours, fees or visitor facilities are known, as the place is not set up for tourist visits.
