To make a day of it

Burg Hossingen stands in Hossingen (Zollernalbkreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Hossingen is what remains of a spur castle overlooking a valley near the village of Hossingen, part of the town of Meßstetten. Built in the first half of the 12th century by ministerials serving the counts of Hohenberg, it later passed to the lords of Tierberg and then, in 1418, to Württemberg. What survives today are a few wall fragments and two transverse ditches, along with a largely intact system of defensive barrier works on the opposite side of the valley.

What to know

  • This is a ruined site rather than a restored castle, with only scattered masonry remains.
  • The location sits on a rocky spur in open countryside, so visitors should expect uneven ground.
  • Defensive barrier works on the opposite side of the valley are part of what can be seen nearby.
  • No opening hours, fees or access facilities are documented, suggesting a freely accessible open-air ruin.
