Burg Hohenkrähen is a ruined hilltop castle crowning a volcanic peak of the Hegau region, near Mühlhausen-Ehingen in the Landkreis Konstanz. Built around 1180 to 1190 by the lords of Friedingen, it stands at 644 metres and offers views toward the Festung Hohentwiel and the Burg Mägdeberg. Besieged and destroyed in 1512, later rebuilt, it was burned down for good in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War and has remained a ruin ever since. Since 1956 the lower castle area has also served as a base for a German scouting association, which maintains the outer buildings.
What to know
- The summit can only be reached on foot, via a narrow and steep path.
- The climb requires a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear for uneven ground.
- As an open-air ruin, the site can be visited freely, with no known fixed opening hours.
- The wooded slopes host one of Germany's largest populations of edible dormice, so staying on marked paths is advisable.
- The lower castle area is used by a German scouting association, which maintains buildings and a campsite there, separate from the ruin itself.
