Hohenfreyberg Castle stands in ruins on a twin-peaked rocky ridge, facing its neighbour Eisenberg Castle north of Pfronten. Built from 1418 by Friedrich von Freyberg, it was deliberately designed in the style of an earlier high medieval hill castle, even though that form was already outdated by then. Burned down in 1646 near the end of the Thirty Years' War, it has remained an uninhabited ruin ever since, its keep and long stretches of wall having undergone a widely noted conservation effort between 1995 and 2006.
