To make a day of it

Burgstall Gschrift stands in Eisenberg (Landkreis Ostallgäu), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Gschrift marks the remains of a small medieval lordly seat in Eisenberg, in the Landkreis Ostallgäu, Bavaria. It was once home to a family of ministerials whose names have not survived, and stood atop a sandstone outcrop roughly ten metres high, with a summit plateau of about fifteen by fifteen metres. Only scant traces of the enclosing wall remain today, along with a memorial stone placed there around 1935 by the local castle researcher Otto Merkt.

What to know

  • This is not a standing castle but an archaeological site reduced to a few wall fragments and a rock outcrop.
  • The surrounding grounds, a former military munitions depot, remain fenced off and are currently not open to the public.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as no organised visit exists.
  • Set in woodland on a steep rocky outcrop, the site would in any case be difficult to reach and unmarked.
  • Its interest lies mainly in local history and place-name research rather than in any visible monument.
