To make a day of it

Burg Heinsberg stands in Heinsberg (Kreis Heinsberg), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Heinsberg is a medieval ruin built on a motte in the centre of the town of Heinsberg, in the district of the same name. Once the seat of the lords of Heinsberg, it was expanded into a bastioned fortress in the 16th century before gradually falling into decay, likely during the wars waged by Louis XIV at the end of the 17th century. Visitors today find remnants of walls, together with traces of the town wall and later bastioned fortifications, on a site that ranks among the largest surviving motte structures in the Rhineland.

What to know

  • The site lies right in the centre of Heinsberg, an easy walk from the old town.
  • It is an open-air ruin, with no habitable building or indoor exhibition.
  • The raised motte requires a short walk uphill to explore the area.
  • As no opening hours or fees are set, the ruins can be visited freely from the surrounding grounds.
  • The nearby Kirchberg hill, home to St. Gangolf church, rounds out a visit to the historic area.
