Schloss Elsum stands west of the Birgelen district of Wassenberg, almost entirely surrounded by water-filled moats. Its layout in two parts, an enclosed outer bailey and a fortified manor house on its own island, illustrates the typical evolution of Rhenish moated castles from a medieval motte to an early modern residence. Three brick corner towers, including a massive eastern one with a staircase built into its thick walls, rise above the site, linked to the outer bailey by an arched bridge.
