To make a day of it
Burg Flinsbach stands in Helmstadt-Bargen (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Flinsbach was a hilltop castle, now vanished, that once stood on a spur of the Hoheberg east of the village of Flinsbach, within the municipality of Helmstadt-Bargen. Its origins are uncertain, with the lords of Hirschhorn and the counts of Hohenberg both suggested as possible builders. Excavations have uncovered a ditch, the probable base of a tower, and a heated hall equipped with a tiled stove, before the castle was abandoned and likely destroyed by fire. What remains today is an archaeological site in the open, with no standing walls.
What to know
- No standing walls remain: the site is essentially a wooded terrain with a ditch and earthworks to spot on the ground.
- Access is via a path leading onto a spur of the Hoheberg, through forest, without any tourist infrastructure.
- A visit suits hikers or those curious about archaeology more than conventional castle sightseeing.
- There are no opening hours or admission fees, as the site sits outdoors and is freely accessible.
- Sturdy footwear is advisable, since the ground is sloped and unimproved.
