To make a day of it

Burg Braunsberg stands in Anhausen (Landkreis Neuwied), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Braunsberg is a ruined castle perched on a rocky spur above the Aubach valley, near Anhausen. Built around 1200 by Bruno I of Isenburg, it was one of the ancestral seats of the counts of Wied. Sections of wall, once standing almost up to roof height before being largely destroyed by American artillery fire in March 1945, still hint at the polygonal keep that once stood there. The site, still owned by the princely family of Wied, now houses a forester's residence among the ruins.

What to know

  • The ruin sits on a rocky spur that is steep and hard to approach on three sides, with only one accessible route.
  • Part of the grounds is used as a private forester's residence, which limits visits to the exterior surroundings.
  • The destruction of March 1945 greatly reduced the standing walls that can be seen today.
  • No information on opening hours, fees or visitor facilities is available, so this should be checked locally.
