The Burg Bad Orb rises above the old town of this Hessian spa town, right next to St Martin's church, whose parish grew out of the former castle chapel. First recorded in 1064, the building served many different purposes over the centuries, from an administrative seat for the archbishops of Mainz to a cigar factory in the 19th century. Only a solid three storey structure remains, reshaped during the Renaissance period, now housing the town museum devoted to the local history and social life of Bad Orb.
