To make a day of it

Alteburg (Biebergemünd) stands in Biebergemünd (Main-Kinzig-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Alteburg is a former fortified site of Celtic origin, set on the Hoppesberg hill above the Kasselgrund valley, about 3.5 kilometres south of Biebergemünd-Kassel. It consists of a circular earthwork with two gates, surrounded by a ditch and once reinforced with a stone wall, parts of which have been reconstructed by a local history society. Excavations have shown that the site was occupied in several periods, from pre-Celtic times through to the early Middle Ages, with traces of timber and clay dwellings at its centre. Finds from the site are displayed at the Biebergrund Museum in Biebergemünd-Bieber.

What to know

  • The site is open-air and can be visited freely, with no fixed opening hours.
  • A themed trail called "Auf den Spuren der Kelten" circles the earthwork and helps visitors follow the layout of the rampart.
  • The Alteburg lies along the Keltenstraße, a regional route dedicated to Celtic remains.
  • Finds from the excavations are not displayed on site but at the Biebergrund Museum in Biebergemünd-Bieber.
  • Reaching the site involves a forest path up the Hoppesberg hill, so sturdy walking shoes are advisable.
