To make a day of it

Blaues Wunder stands in Wächtersbach (Main-Kinzig-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Blaues Wunder, also known as Schloss Kinzighausen, is a former Schloss that no longer stands, in the Kinzig valley between the hamlets of Neudorf and Aufenau, part of Wächtersbach in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Hesse. Built around 1600 on the site of an earlier medieval stronghold, it took its name either from its timber framing painted blue above a sandstone base, or, according to another local account, from a Kinzig flood it reportedly survived undamaged. Owned for centuries by the Forstmeister von Gelnhausen family, the estate was sold in 1782, lost its residential role, and was torn down in 1805. Only the outer walls of the attached farmstead remain today, set among the meadows of the valley.

What to know

  • The Schloss building itself was torn down in 1805; only the outer walls of the attached farmstead survive.
  • The site lies between the hamlets of Neudorf and Aufenau, reached via the local road K886 from the B276 or L3216.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as the site is not set up for tourist visits.
  • A Connemara pony stud with a riding school now occupies part of the grounds.
  • This is a rural site best viewed from the outside, with no visitor facilities.
