Perched above Gutenstein, a district of Sigmaringen, Burg Altgutenstein survives only as a modest ruin on a rocky spur some 640 metres up, facing the Danube. Built in the 12th century by the lords of Gutenstein, it was last recorded as inhabited in the mid 14th century and had already fallen into decay by the mid 16th century. What remains today are scant traces of a keep whose base measured only a few metres across.
