Burg Alpen stands in Alpen (Kreis Wesel), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Alpen refers to the remains of a vanished motte castle in the Kreis Wesel, in North Rhine-Westphalia. First documented around 1200, it belonged to Heinrich von Alpen before passing, through pledging, to the von Neuenahr family. Inhabited until the 18th century, it was left uninhabitable by an earthquake in 1758 and was leveled in 1809, its materials used to build a road during the French occupation. Only a mound remains today, cut through by that same road, the Burgstraße.
What to know
- No building remains standing; only an earthen mound marks the site today.
- The site lies along the Burgstraße, which partly cuts through the former motte.
- There are no opening hours or fees, the site is an open-air location that can be visited freely.
- This is not a castle in the usual sense; there is no restored or furnished structure to see.
- Countess Amalia von Neuenahr-Alpen, born here in 1539, is the most notable historical figure connected to the site.
