Haus Winnenthal is a moated manor complex lying between Unterbirten and Alpen-Veen, in the Xanten district of Birten. Probably built in the first half of the 14th century by the counts of Jülich, it ranks among the oldest surviving moated sites on the Lower Rhine. Its most notable period came in the 15th century, when Duke Adolf II of Cleves had it enlarged for his son Johann and his wife Elisabeth of Burgundy. Heavily damaged during the Second World War and later rebuilt in the 1980s, the building now functions as a senior residence together with its outer bailey.
