To make a day of it

Schloss Ringenberg stands in Hamminkeln (Kreis Wesel), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Ringenberg stands at the edge of the Ringenberg district, surrounded by its moat, on the remains of a medieval stronghold destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Rebuilt from 1648 onwards by the von Spaen brothers, it now forms a three-wing brick complex in Dutch classical style, flanked by two round corner towers dating back to the 14th century. Inside, a ground-floor room retains a painted wooden beam ceiling from the late 17th century, bearing the coat of arms of Alexander von Spaen, one of the few such ceilings to survive intact in the Rhineland. The building today houses Hamminkeln's civil registry office, an artists' studio centre and a restaurant.

What to know

  • The building today houses municipal offices, an artists' studio centre and a restaurant, which limits access to parts of the interior.

  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees are published, since the building mainly serves as a seat for local institutions.
