The Altes Schloss Beihingen stands in Freiberg am Neckar, made up of two timber framed buildings facing each other and enclosed by a surrounding wall. Its origins trace back to a Romanesque stronghold, of which only part of the tower remains, while the oldest building still visible, the Steinhaus, dates from around 1480. The complex took on its present form from 1546 onward under the lords of Freiberg, after earlier passing through the hands of the von Nothafft and von Stammheim families. Today it houses the town archive, a library and several apartments, making it an inhabited complex rather than a conventional visitor attraction.
