What the French Ministry of Culture records

Château du 11e siècle, remanié au 14e siècle (grande tour carrée de 1314) sous la domination anglaise, puis au début du 15e siècle (1407) quand il entre dans le domaine des comtes de Foix. Utilisation comme place-forte du 14e siècle jusqu'en 1889. Réparations en 1580 et 1616. Sous Louis XV et Napoléon Ier, le château devient une prison. Importants travaux de 1828 à 1856, conformément aux instructions données par Vauban. En 1920, installation d'un musée pyrénéen.
