The ruins of Saint-Vérain castle stand on a height above the Maloise stream, in the Nièvre department. Together with the village, the site forms one of the most complete fortified settlements remaining in the area. Visitors can still trace the outline of a first enclosure pierced by three gates once flanked by round towers, along with remnants of seven towers and a square tower along the walls. Inside this enclosure once stood the church, the priory and the market.
