Built on the site of a fortified hunting lodge dating back to the 10th century, Saint-Fargeau castle keeps the pentagonal shape given to it by Antoine de Chabannes after 1453, with its massive tower acting as a keep. The Grande Mademoiselle, Louis XIV's cousin exiled here after the Fronde uprising, had the four inner façades rebuilt by royal architect François Le Vau, whose monogram can still be spotted here and there. The estate later passed to the Le Peletier family, one of whom, a regicide murdered in 1793, gave his name to the neighbouring village. Visitors today can see the classified façades, the moat and the park, remnants of nine centuries of feudal and seigneurial history.
