What the French Ministry of Culture records

Maison forte existant déjà au 13e siècle, le château fut fortifié au 15e siècle. Victime des luttes religieuses du 16e siècle, il fut restauré et agrandi au 17e siècle. Le parc fut aménagé au 18e siècle (création de terrasses et d'un enclos) et de nouveaux décors intérieurs (boiseries, cheminées, chambres à alcôves) furent installés. Sous la Restauration, deux pièces du château (salon et une chambre du premier étage) furent dotées d'un décor peint exceptionnel. Le château entra dans la littérature au 20e siècle en servant de cadre au roman régionaliste d'Henri Pourrat «Gaspard des Montagnes».
