In Renac, Ille-et-Vilaine, the Château du Brossay has stood since the late 19th century within a park crossed by woodland that shelters four prehistoric standing stones. Built between 1894 and 1896 for Maurice du Halgouët de Poulpiquet by architect Henri Mellet, the neo-Renaissance building combines sandstone and limestone in a complex layout of towers and pavilions. The interior keeps its original layout, with a white limestone grand staircase, a fully panelled dining room and a polygonal drawing room with refined decoration. Around the main house stand a chapel, outbuildings and a model farm built at the same time as the château.
What to know
- The château is privately owned and only partly open to the public, mainly through events or guided visits by appointment.
- The 30-hectare park includes a pond and a wooded area where four protected standing stones can be found.
- The building is listed as a historic monument, a protection covering the main house, the park, the chapel, the outbuildings and the Cabinet farm.
- The ground floor of the château is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, with adapted toilet facilities.
- The estate also operates as a guest house and event venue, which can limit public access to the building depending on the period.
