Cette forteresse a été construite à la fin du 15e siècle sur un plan en V dont il subsiste une aile, remaniée du 17e au 19e siècle. La tour du châtelet est, une partie de celle du châtelet nord et le mur de courtine sont d'origine. Les interventions du deuxième quart du 19e siècle illustrent l'un des plus anciens programmes de remaniement de châteaux au cours du 19e siècle en Bretagne. L'édifice est un témoin de l'une des grandes forteresses de Bretagne. Il témoigne également de l'évolution de l'habitation de la noblesse au cours des 17e, 18e et 19e siècles.
