The Château du Bailleul stands in the commune of Hercé, halfway to Gorron, in the Mayenne region. The present building, surrounded by a moat, was erected in the early nineteenth century on the site of an older fortress with towers and a double moat, dismantled after the Revolution. A beech-lined avenue still connects the estate to the town of Gorron, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch remains in the forecourt. The site was the seat of a seigneury held for centuries by the du Bailleul family before passing to the d'Abrantès family in the nineteenth century.
