Château des comtes de Lallaing stands in Lallaing (Nord), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century). No visits are on record for this building.
The castle of the counts of Lallaing occupied a fortified site from the 12th century onwards, gradually transformed into a fortress in the Middle Ages. The Lallaing family, several of whose members shaped regional history, established their principal seat there. By the 13th century, the fortress stood surrounded by a polygonal wall flanked by cylindrical towers, with a massive square keep at the entrance. Wars in the 17th century and successive changes of ownership, particularly after passing to the Arenberg family, led to its decline. Today, only the entrance gate and vestiges remain, preserved in the grounds of the current town hall.
What to know
- The site is not open to the public as a castle museum: it is a park adjoining the town hall, where you can see the historical entrance gate and a pillory.
- Most of the medieval fortress disappeared in the 20th century during the construction of the town hall.
- The visible remains (gate, bridge) form part of Lallaing's urban landscape and are freely accessible.
- A 12th-century keep, remodelled in the Renaissance, once stood on the site before its demolition.
