To make a day of it

Château de l'abbaye de Cysoing stands in Cysoing (Nord), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century, 19th century). Only part of the building can be visited.

Built in the aftermath of the French Revolution on the grounds of the former Cysoing abbey, this eighteenth-century château embodies Enlightenment taste for elegant, theatrical structures. Inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, it comprises a pavilion defined by a central section with Ionic columns and a curved pediment, extended since the early twentieth century by a park with winding paths. The ensemble survives in the urban landscape as a remnant of revolutionary property redistribution and nineteenth-century romantic landscaping.

What to know

  • The building and part of its historic park, along with the walls of the former abbey enclosure, have been listed as historical monuments since 2008.
  • The château resulted from the division of the abbey after the Revolution: lawyer Philippe Joseph Riquet acquired two-thirds and had this pavilion built in alignment with existing structures.
  • In the early twentieth century, architect Léonce Hainez remodeled the pavilion and transformed the outbuildings to modernize its appearance.
  • The romantic park's winding paths date from 1824 onwards, marking the shift from formal gardens to picturesque taste.

Frequently asked

What remains of the original abbey?
The abbey was divided at the Revolution into separately sold parcels. The present château occupies part of the land acquired by Riquet, alongside remains of the garden and its outbuildings, notably a pavilion overlooking the grounds.
What architectural style does the château follow?
It draws directly from the Petit Trianon at Versailles, spreading this model of a refined, lightweight pavilion to the provinces, with a central risalit featuring colossal-order columns and a curved pediment.
Is the current park from the same period?
No: the winding paths forming the English-style park were laid out after 1824, well after the château's construction, according to the romantic taste becoming prevalent in the nineteenth century.
