To make a day of it

Château de Viviers-lès-Montagnes stands in Viviers-lès-Montagnes (Tarn), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Built on a promontory overlooking the plain with a view of the Montagne Noire, the château of Viviers-lès-Montagnes retains traces of a fortified Benedictine priory dating back to the 9th century. Centuries of sieges and rebuilding left a composite structure, from the medieval horseshoe-shaped layout to the large neoclassical openings added in the 19th century. Visitors can see three tiers of vaulted cellars stepped according to the slope of the land, along with an east facade that still bears battlements and gargoyles. Fragments of Renaissance sculpture, uncovered during excavations, are now displayed in the garden.
