Le nom de Villepion remonterait à l'époque gallo-romaine (Villa Peditum, campement de l'infanterie). Sur une surface de plan carré cernée de douves, le château barre symétriquement l'axe principal sur lequel sont édifiés les ponts d'accès. Des quatre pavillons saillants aux angles, un seul subsiste, composé d'un grand corps central encadré de deux pavillons, avec deux autres plus petits en retour d'ailes qui enserrent les tourelles des escaliers.
