Surrounded by the ponds of the Dombes region, the château de Varax stands on the site of a medieval stronghold, of which two square towers dating from the 14th and 15th centuries survive. It was the seat of a lordship, later a county, held by the Varax family, and was almost entirely destroyed in 1593 before being altered over the following centuries. The courtyard, once an orchard, was turned into an ornamental pool in the early 20th century.
