In Fontenay-le-Comte, the Terre Neuve château was built at the end of the 16th century for Nicolas Rapin, a companion of Henri IV and a man of letters. Its original austerity was reworked in the 19th century by an unusual heir, Octave de Rochebrune, a painter and etcher, who installed woodwork, ceilings and fireplaces salvaged from old regional houses, including the château of Chambord. The result is a composite interior, where 16th and 17th century royal fittings sit in rooms never designed for them, giving a striking, almost overloaded effect.
