In Septmonts, in the Aisne department, stands the former country residence of the bishops of Soissons, begun in the 13th century and expanded through the Renaissance. The site is marked from afar by its 47-metre keep, raised from 1373 under bishop Simon de Bucy, whose spiral staircase serves seven vaulted levels with ribbed crossings. Around it survive moats, remains of the outer wall, a square tower pierced with arrow loops, and the ruins of the Renaissance residence where bishop Symphorien de Bullioud died in 1534. The surrounding park contains an arboretum and an orchard.
