Located in Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières in the Essonne, the Château de Segrez was built in 1733 for André Haudry, a financier who had risen into the nobility, before its formal gardens were reshaped into an English-style picturesque park at the end of the 18th century. The estate owes its reputation to the arboretum created in the 19th century by botanist Alphonse Lavallée, who gathered thousands of tree and shrub species there. Visitors today come for the shell-lined grotto, the remarkable old trees planted by Lavallée, and the rare coherence of a landscape designed more than two centuries ago.
