What the French Ministry of Culture records

L'édifice est bâti en 1733. A partir de 1747, est aménagé un parc régulier autour du château, avec bosquets, parterres réguliers, jets d'eau, bassins, pièce d'eau, miroir d'eau et réseau hydraulique. En 1782, le parc régulier est transformé en parc pittoresque avec une grotte à deux salles ornées de coquillages du Pacifique. A partir de 1857, le botaniste Pierre-Alphonse-Martin Lavallée fait ses premières plantations d'arbres et d'arbustes. En 1858, il entreprend de réunir "tous les végétaux ligneux cultivables à l'air libre". A partir de 1860, il décide d'ordonner ses collections et d'établir des écoles d'arbres en ligne, regroupant des végétaux classés par famille et étiquetés. A sa mort, le domaine compte 6500 espèces. En 1869, le château est agrandi et deux ailes sont ajoutées de part et d'autre du corps central pour y loger le personnel employé à l'arboretum. Les collections botaniques continuent aujourd'hui d'être agrandies.
