To make a day of it

Château de Saint-Bernard stands in Saint-Bernard (Ain), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first quarter of the 14th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing above the village of Saint-Bernard in the Ain department, this fortified castle dating from the early 14th century once formed part of a defensive line facing Savoy. Its rectangular enclosure, flanked by two round corner towers and closed off by a tall main building, still conveys the character of a stronghold despite alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. The site is also remembered for having hosted painter Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo, who painted it on several occasions.
