In Château-sur-Allier, the Château de Saint-Augustin stands within an extensive park, rebuilt in 1730 for Gilbert Cadier on the ruins of an earlier hunting lodge his father had raised with Mansart's help. The polychrome brickwork of its towers and façades, together with the symmetrical arrangement of outbuildings around its main courtyard, form an 18th-century ensemble unusual in this part of France. Inside, a hall with Doric columns, a dining room decorated with painted stucco and an 18th-century chapel reflect the refinement sought by its successive owners.
