To make a day of it

Château de Rochechinard stands in Rochechinard (Drôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched at 600 metres on a rocky spur above the valley, Rochechinard castle occupied a fortified site as early as the 12th century, before a building campaign around 1480-1490 led by the Alleman family gave it its present form. Three distinct structures remain: a residential wing facing the Vercors massif, an artillery tower pierced with numerous gunports, and a central tower for close defence. Abandoned from the early 18th century onward, the ruins later drew the attention of romantic painters and poets in the 19th century.
