What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le repaire aurait été construit au 11e siècle. Bâti à pic sur le rocher, avec un mur d'enceinte percé de meurtrières, le château commande la route qui longe la rivière, à mi chemin entre Brantôme et Bourdeilles. Le corps de logis principal est flanqué de trois tours qui furent rasées à la Révolution. Un châtelet d'entrée ferme la cour qui forme une enceinte complète mais dont les bâtiments annexes furent remplacés, au 19e siècle, par les constructions actuelles, dont une galerie à colonnes. Le mur ancien du donjon, percé d'une fenêtre trilobé, subsiste.
