To make a day of it

Château de Poncin stands in Poncin (Ain), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 13th century, 14th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Overlooking the town of Poncin in the Ain department, this fortified castle dates back to the late 13th century, when it was rebuilt by the lords of Thoire-Villars on an older fortified site. Its facades, defensive remains and terraces reflect successive alterations carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Dukes of Nemours, followed by garden works undertaken in the 18th century. Visitors can trace the layered history of a seigneurial estate that served as an accounting residence, was dismantled on royal order, and was later partly rebuilt.
