To make a day of it
Château de Palaminy stands in Palaminy (Haute-Garonne), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Palaminy Castle occupies the northwest corner of the medieval bastide founded around 1250-1260 by Sicart-Aleman, seneschal of the Count of Toulouse. Built of stone with massive corner towers, it incorporated the original fortifications and was enhanced over the centuries, notably with a corbelled tower added in the 17th century. Inside, 19th-century woodwork adorns the staircase and reception rooms, while the Marquise's Chamber retains its 18th-century Lyon silks.
What to know
- The castle stands as a key element of the original 13th-century bastide fortifications, whose grid layout and pebbled walls remain visible.
- The interior preserves successive decorative periods: 19th-century reception woodwork, the Marquise's Chamber with red 18th-century silks, and a brick fireplace from the 17th floor.
- Opposite the castle, two historic houses complete the heritage ensemble: La Roucat house and the Tilleul house with timber framing.
- The site underwent major transformation in 1878 when its formal French garden was replaced by an English-style park, itself restored in 1912.
