In Merceuil, in the Côte-d'Or, the château de Morteuil stands along a driveway off the RD 113d, at the edge of the hamlet that bears its name. Its history goes back to the late 15th century, though the building seen today was largely rebuilt in the 18th century, then altered during the Revolution when its loopholes were sealed and its drawbridge removed. It is best known for having housed, between 1924 and 1925, theatre director Jacques Copeau and his troupe, who lived and rehearsed there despite its poor condition at the time. The north facade, flanked by square towers and pierced by a round arched gateway, still recalls the building's former defensive role.
