What the French Ministry of Culture records

Originaire d'une famille modeste de Samoëns, Marie-Louise Jay épouse, en 1872, Ernest Cognacq, avec qui elle fonde les magasins de la Samaritaine. Atteignant une fortune considérable, le couple l'emploie, dès la fin du 19e siècle, à la création d'oeuvres caritatives. La construction du jardin botanique alpin de la Jaysinia s'inscrit dans cette démarche. Consciente du développement touristique des Alpes, Marie-Louise Jay envisage, à partir de 1904, de donner à son village d'origine un jardin botanique alpin et une villa destinée à abriter les activités du médecin. La fondatrice fait appel au paysagiste Louis-Jules Allemand, spécialisé dans les décors de rocaille. Le jardin est inauguré en 1906.
