Standing more than 80 metres above the Dordogne valley, the château de Monsec rises on the heights above the village of Mouzens, in the Périgord noir region. Its origins go back to the first half of the 14th century, though the present buildings combine a 17th-century entrance gatehouse, a Renaissance wing and an older section whose façades are carved with figures of demons, witches and acrobats. The grounds include a 19th-century neo-Gothic chapel holding the family tombs, along with a tower topped by a statue of the Virgin overlooking the river.
