In Vaulx-Milieu, in the Isère department, the château de Montbaly stands on the site of a fortified house said to date back to the 15th century. Its present appearance results from a late 19th century rebuilding carried out by the Lyon architect Léon Charvet, in a style drawing on medieval models. Visible features include corbelled turrets, a square tower, and an old gateway linking two wings around an inner courtyard topped with machicolations. Over time the property has served various purposes, from farm to a building divided into private flats.
