At Messei, in the Orne department, the remains of an 11th-century stronghold sit on a plateau just outside the village. Once counted among the leading fortified sites of Normandy, all that survives today is a section of wall built into a farm building, two feudal mounds and the moats that once surrounded them. The site carries traces of centuries of seigneurial history, from the Hundred Years' War through the Wars of Religion to its demolition in the 19th century, when its stones were reused as building material.
